Abstract

On certain religious and national holidays, the roads and sidewalks of Orchard Road and Orchard Boulevard are decorated according to the theme of celebration. However, not all religious holidays are displayed. Displays for certain religions are accused of being more festive than other religions and the independence of the Republic of Indonesia. This raises concerns of resentment. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the perceptions of visitors to Orchard Road and Boulevard regarding the potential for horizontal conflict due to unequal festive displays. The respondents of this study were 39 visitors to Orchard Road and Boulevard. Using a qualitative case study approach, this research used semi-structured interviews and field observations to collect data. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative. The results showed that Chinese New Year ornaments are the most widely used ornaments (31%). Respondents felt that there was a difference in festivity between the celebration of religious holidays and Indonesian independence (59%). The lack of representation of all religions in the ornaments displayed by Citraland Gama City management is a problem that risks causing horizontal conflict in the community (46%). However, according to respondents (51.3%), based on facts in the field, differences in the display of certain holiday festivities do not interfere with inter-religious harmony around the Citraland Gama City area. As many as 56.4% of respondents argue that the festive display of holidays found in other religions is possible due to considerations of the identity of majority of people living in Citraland Gama City housing.
