- Abstract
Legal awareness among Pancasila and Citizenship Education (PPKn) teachers plays a strategic role in efforts to enhance the understanding and dissemination of Human Rights (HAM) principles within the school environment. PPKn teachers function not only as educators but also as agents of change capable of instilling human rights values in students through instruction based on legal awareness. This research is prompted by the persistent low level of teacher understanding regarding human rights regulations, particularly in the context of protecting children’s rights at school. Gajah Mada High School serves as one example of an educational institution facing challenges in the effective implementation of human rights values. This study employs a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with PPKn teachers, observation of the teaching and learning process, and a documentary analysis of school policies related to human rights education. Data analysis was conducted using the techniques of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The research subjects were selected purposively, taking into consideration teachers whose field of study is PPKn and their involvement in human rights counseling activities at the school. The research findings indicate that PPKn teachers at Gajah Mada High School generally possess a good theoretical understanding of law and Human Rights (HAM), but its implementation in the classroom still faces various constraints, such as time limitations, a lack of training, and insufficient institutional support. Nevertheless, some teachers have already undertaken the role of human rights advocates through contextual learning activities and involvement in student character-building programs. This study affirms that PPKn teachers with legal awareness can become agents of change in building a culture of law and respect for human rights in schools, provided they are supported by adequate policies and training.
