- Abstract
Coastal environmental degradation caused by the destruction of mangrove ecosystems remains an urgent global issue that threatens not only ecological balance but also the long-term sustainability of coastal communities. Mangroves play a vital role as natural barriers that protect coastlines from erosion, tidal waves, and storm surges, while also serving as breeding grounds for various marine species. However, rapid exploitation of coastal resources, land conversion, and limited awareness have led to a significant decline in mangrove ecosystems. The low level of community participation in preserving this ecosystem reflects weak awareness and a lack of responsibility, particularly in the context of ecological citizenship. In response, this study aims to strengthen ecological citizenship through a community-based mangrove plantation program as a strategic effort for environmental restoration and community empowerment. The research employed the Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) method, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman approach, consisting of data reduction, data display, and data verification. The findings indicate that community-based mangrove planting not only rehabilitates degraded ecosystems but also fosters ecological awareness, encourages collaboration among stakeholders, and strengthens community resilience. Thus, this program demonstrates the effectiveness of participatory and sustainable conservation practices, while serving as a model that can be replicated in other coastal regions facing similar environmental challenges.
