Abstract

This study examines the impact of demographic characteristics on academic burnout among higher education students in Indonesia. A total of 346 undergraduate students in Indonesia participated in a survey using the School Burnout Inventory (Salmela-Aro et al., 2009). The instrument was pilot-tested with 151 students and demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach’s α = 0.84; subscales ranging from 0.62 to 0.84). Construct validity was supported through item-total correlations (r = 0.558–0.775, p < .01), indicating satisfactory convergent validity. Descriptive analysis revealed that most students reported moderate levels of burnout across the dimensions of exhaustion, cynicism, and inadequacy. Inferential tests—including independent-samples t-tests and one-way ANOVAs—showed no statistically significant differences in burnout across gender, age groups, cohort years, or residential status. These non-significant findings highlight that demographic factors alone are insufficient to explain variation in student burnout. The results underscore the need to consider broader psychosocial variables, such as workload, coping strategies, and social support, when addressing academic burnout. The study contributes to ongoing debates on the universality versus contextuality of burnout predictors, suggesting that interventions should adopt a holistic approach rather than relying solely on demographic profiling.
