Abstract

Local cultural values are increasingly eroded by the currents of modernization, which pose a threat to the character of the younger generation. This situation demands efforts to strengthen cultural citizenship through the revitalization of local philosophies. This study aims to explore and interpret Poda Na Lima as a character-based Mandailing philosophy that is relevant for strengthening cultural citizenship in society. This research employed a qualitative method with a literature study approach. Data were collected from journals, books, and articles related to Mandailing philosophy. Data analysis used Miles and Huberman’s technique, which consists of data reduction, data display, and data verification. The results show that the Mandailing ethnic group upholds the Poda Na Lima philosophy, which is deeply rooted in local values and serves as a guide for daily life. This philosophy guides physical, spiritual, and moral behavior through five main teachings: Paias Rohamu (purify the heart), Paias Pamatangmu (clean the body), Paias Parabitonmu (clean the clothing), Paias Bagasmu (clean the house), and Paias Pakaranganmu (clean the yard). These values emphasize the importance of maintaining personal and environmental cleanliness as well as integrity in actions. These principles can serve as a foundation for character education based on local wisdom that is relevant for developing cultural citizenship within the community.
