Abstract

This study was motivated by the rising cases of juvenile delinquency in Indonesia over the past decade, including theft, student brawls, drug abuse, and promiscuity. Such issues emphasize the urgent need to strengthen character education for the younger generation. One effective approach is presenting national figures as role models who can inspire positive behavior. Raden Ajeng Kartini was chosen as the focus of this study because of her role as a pioneer of women’s emancipation in Indonesia. Her courage, critical thinking, and struggles provide valuable lessons that remain relevant for character education today.

The research employed a literature review method using descriptive, historical, and biographical qualitative approaches. Data was drawn from Kartini’s letters, relevant literature, and scholarly works analyzing her life and ideas. Both deductive and inductive analyses were applied to identify the values reflected in her experiences.

Findings reveal that Kartini not only fought for women’s access to education but also embodied character values such as critical thinking, independence, diligence, courage, religiosity, intelligence, and tolerance. These values emerged through her resistance to traditional restrictions, colonial structures, and gender inequality. The study highlights that Kartini’s values are still highly relevant in the current era, especially as Indonesian youth face challenges of globalization and moral decline. Therefore, incorporating Kartini’s character values into education can serve as a strong foundation for shaping student personalities and strengthening moral resilience in modern society.
