Abstract

Traditional and modern teaching methods differ in their pedagogical foundations, instructional strategies and learner engagement modes, yet both seek to improve learning, attention, well-being and inclusion. Traditional approaches such as chalk-and-talk, mentoring and contemplative practices emphasize structure, relational trust and accessibility, while modern approaches, including AI-enabled instruction, learning analytics and equity-focused design offer personalization, scalability and data-driven insights. Although each has been studied separately, their methodological comparisons can provide insights into how their strengths can be effectively combined. This survey presents a side-by-side analysis of various teaching methods, their combined applications, associated challenges and future directions for integrating their strengths in educational practice.
