These proceedings contain a selection of 36 papers presented at the 4th International Conference of Research on Language (IRoLe 2025), held on 9–10 September 2025, with a pre-conference workshop on 8 September 2025. The conference was jointly organised by Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia, and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Melaka, Malaysia, and was conducted in a hybrid format, enabling participation from both on-site and online attendees.

The theme of IRoLe 2025, “The Roles of Multilingualism and Multiculturalism in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals across the Archipelago,” highlights the significance of language and culture in addressing contemporary social, educational, and global development issues. The conference provided an academic forum for researchers, educators, practitioners, and postgraduate students to present and discuss research related to language studies, applied linguistics, language education, intercultural communication, digital discourse, and language policy.

All papers included in this volume were selected through a peer-review process conducted by reviewers with relevant expertise. The review process focused on the originality, relevance, clarity, and academic contribution of each submission. The accepted papers represent a range of theoretical perspectives, research methodologies, and contextual settings, reflecting the interdisciplinary and international nature of current research on language, multilingualism, and multiculturalism.

The editors would like to express their sincere appreciation to the keynote and invited speakers, reviewers, authors, and members of the organising committee for their valuable contributions and commitment to the success of IRoLe 2025. It is hoped that these proceedings will contribute to ongoing scholarly discourse and serve as a useful reference for future research in language and related fields.
