- Abstract
The world sees a fall in adolescents’ physical activities, with this also leading to health problems. Physical education needs to change as a result. This paper studies a health-promoting physical education (OHPPE) model which fully develops youth physical literacy. Physical literacy, the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engage in physical activity for a lifetime, it is considered the desired outcome from an effective PE program. This research gives the theoretical framework of the OHPPE model, the OHPPE model combines principles of health-promoting schools and self-determination theory. Emphasizes student centered curriculum; Autonomy supportive teaching and emphasis of movement basics and lifelong activity v traditional sport-based instruction.
This article provides an example of a hypothetical longitudinal study with 500 students who are in secondary school comparing the impact of the OHPPE model to Traditional PE curriculum. The study shows information before and after the change for the main physical literacy sections. Data is presented in four tables showing major predicted improvement from Intervention in the groups’ intrinsic motivation, subjective competence, and engagement in physical activity outside of school hours. For example, the average score for the intervention groups on the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory may increase from 4.2 to 6.1 when compared with a minor change for the control group Also the data from the skills assessment from a hypothetical intervention group is improved significantly on their mastery of fundamental movement skills. The findings strongly suggest that by moving away from performance type metrics to fostering a sense of empowerment and positivity about the benefits and effects, the OHPPE model could be used very successfully as a framework to help people become optimally healthy and happy for their entire life through promoting physical-literacies. This paper concludes with the implication for PE curriculum, PE teachers’ training, and public policy.
