- Abstract
Short-video platforms represented by TikTok have profoundly shaped users’ online behaviors through algorithmic recommendations, instantaneous feedback, and identity performance mechanisms. This study investigates how online identity and online peer communication on TikTok influence users’ interpersonal communication competence, emphasizing the moderating role of self-concept clarity. Drawing on social information processing theory (SIPT) and social identity theory (SIT), the paper constructs a theoretical framework that states that self-concept clarity moderates the relationship between online identity and interpersonal communication competence, as well as between online peer communication and interpersonal communication competence. This study aims to bridge existing theoretical gaps, especially regarding digital interactions in cross-cultural contexts. It highlights the critical moderating role of self-concept clarity in interpersonal interactions within the digital age, offering a novel analytical perspective for interpersonal communication research in contemporary digital environments.
