- Abstract
The various ways of expressing menstruation in modern society, along with the influence of prevailing ideas, have gradually given rise to menstrual shame, leading to an intensification of internalized misogyny. Based on existing data and literature, this paper examines how menstrual shame affects the internalization of misogyny. Based on the framework of Social Identity Theory and Conformity to Violence Theory, the author analyzes how menstruation is represented in modern society; the current status and characteristics of menstrual taboos and shame; and the impact of menstrual taboos and shame on internalized misogyny. The results show that menstrual taboos and shame deeply affect individuals, particularly women, fostering internalized misogyny. This arises from stigmatization, secrecy, social isolation, limited access to education, gender discrimination, mental health impacts, and intergenerational transmission. To combat this, it’s crucial to educate, challenge social norms, promote gender equality, and support mental health.
