Abstract

Clove and cinnamon are two major plants with anti-diabetic effects. A significant lack of findings from recent discoveries that reveal the potency of plant combinations leads to an information gap regarding it. This study aims to uncover the effectiveness of infusion combination between clove and cinnamon. Animal induction of diabetes is done by injection of Streptozotocin (50 mg/kg BW). The animals were given an orally administered infusion of 5 mg/mL clove (P1), 2.5 mg/mL clove (P2), 5 mg/mL cinnamon (P3) and 2.5 mg/mL of both plants in combination (P4) over 21 days of treatment. The animal’s weight was monitored routinely once every 3 days. The blood glucose content of the animals was monitored pre-treatment, during treatment and post-treatment protocol using a blood glucose strip. Compared to other treatment groups, the P1 group exhibits a better body weight maintenance effect of the diabetic-induced STZ mice before STZ injection to the end of the treatment day. The diabetes group exhibits an increase in blood glucose level over time, while the treatment group successfully lowers the blood glucose level gradually until the end of the treatment course. No statistical difference between the treatment groups was found in blood glucose reduction. However, the statistical trend shows that P1 and P2 have better blood glucose reduction effects than P3 and P4. A sole treatment of clove has exhibited better treatment outcomes compared to cinnamon or a combination of both plants.
