Abstract

Background: Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease that can reduce a person’s quality of life. The incidence of osteoporosis worldwide is high, especially among the elderly. This is influenced by various factors, including knowledge. Lack of knowledge leads to negative behavior, such as insufficient preventive measures against osteoporosis, which can increase the risk of developing the disease. This study examines the relationship between the level of knowledge and the behavior of the elderly in osteoporosis prevention. Methods: This research is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling, with a total of 57 elderly subjects. Research data were obtained from the completion of the FOOQ questionnaire and the OPB questionnaire. The statistical analysis used is the chi-square test. Results: The study results show that the majority of respondents have poor knowledge (42.1%) and low osteoporosis prevention behavior (57.9%). Bivariate analysis results indicate a relationship between the level of knowledge and osteoporosis prevention behavior (p=0.000). Conclusion: There is a relationship between the level of knowledge and osteoporosis prevention behavior. The better the knowledge possessed by the elderly, the higher the preventive behavior.
