Abstract

The frequent occurrence of online public opinion reversals poses a severe challenge to public opinion governance. Understanding the mechanisms behind these reversals and deepening our knowledge of them is conducive to enhancing the supervision and guidance of online public opinion. This paper constructs an analytical framework for the generation mechanism of online public opinion reversals based on the information ecology theory. Using 16 hot sudden event public opinion cases as research samples, it employs fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to extract conditional variables from three dimensions: information, information actors, and information environment, in order to explore the reversal mechanism. The results show that online public opinion reversals are the result of the combined effects of various factors across the three dimensions. The conditional variables in the information actor dimension have a significant impact on the formation of reversals. Based on this dimension, online public opinion reversals are categorized into media-dominated, netizen-dominated, and multi-actor interactive types. This study reveals the complex causal relationships among the conditional variables in the phenomenon of online public opinion reversals and enriches the application dimension of information ecology theory.
