Abstract

The relationship between Javanese language learning and the formation of students’ morality is a crucial issue that requires a holistic approach. The failure of educational institutions in shaping students’ morality through teaching cultural values has become an important issue in the modern era. This study aims to examine the extent of the failure of Javanese language learning in primary schools in internalising cultural values. Using a qualitative approach with case studies in three purposively selected primary schools. The results show that Javanese language learning patterns in primary schools tend to be theoretical, such as lectures and memorisation, not yet effective in instilling the expected cultural values. Students often do not show behaviours that reflect the taught morality, such as lack of manners (unggah-ungguh), care (tepaslira), and ethics (tatakrama). This has implications for various behaviours that are not in line with cultural values, such as disregard for rules, selfish behaviour, and lack of concern for others. In addition, the lack of integration of cultural values in daily life exacerbates the failure of internalisation. This research recommends improving the curriculum to be more interactive and contextualised, improving teachers’ competence in cultural literacy-based learning patterns, and implementing more applicable education programmes. These steps are expected to strengthen the formation of students’ morality in accordance with traditional cultural values.
