Abstract

Over the past several decades, the study of film music has evolved into a vital area of interdisciplinary research, encompassing insights from musicology, media studies, semiotics, and auditory theory. Researchers have increasingly recognized film scores not merely as decorative accompaniments but as narrative devices that shape audience perception, emotional response, and character interpretation. Foundational theories in radical listening — such as Roland Barthes’s distinction between geno-song and pheno-song, Kilburn’s aspectual hearing, strategical uses of silences, and notions such as punctum and studium — have laid the groundwork for analyzing the coded and affective dimensions of musical sound. Building on these frameworks, they foreground the listener’s subjectivity and the influence of social identity, memory, and technology in shaping auditory experience. Despite the growing body of literature, relatively few studies have conducted comparative, multi-dimensional analyses of similar musical scenes. This paper aims to contribute to this field by analyzing the music in the film Cinderella produced by Disney — before, during, and after the scene of the ballroom dance — to investigate how musical elements construct atmosphere, signify character transformation, and communicate underlying ideological values.
