Abstract

The United Nations has been continuously emphasizing upon and working tirelessly towards sustainable development. The three pillars that underline sustainable development in an economy are economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection. Hotels are an important part of the overall tourism and hospitality sector and contribute significantly towards the economic growth of global economies by way of job creation, income generation, and tax revenues. However, the long term sustainable development of this sector is jeopardized by challenges like climate change, inflation, and geopolitical disturbances. The current research paper synthesizes the available knowledge with respect to sustainable development in the hotel industry, published in reputed journals. It works towards identifying important dimensions of sustainable development, viz. Environmental, Economic, and Social dimensions on one hand and the key stakeholders of the hotel industry, viz. Managers, Employees, and Customers, on the other hand. It eventually proposes a model that highlights a mutual relationship between these dimensions and key stakeholders. The proposed model can provide deep insights at the strategic level to ensure robust implementation of sustainable development goals in the hotel industry.
