Abstract

Business incubators in academic institutions play a critical role in fostering entrepreneurship, particularly in institutionally void environments where regulatory, financial, and infrastructural gaps hinder business development. This paper explores the challenges faced by academic incubators in aligning their objectives with investor expectations and addressing the needs of startups. Framing the analysis within Scott’s (2008) Model of Institutional Change, the study examines the dual processes of structuration and destructuration, alongside coercive and normative isomorphic pressures, to understand the dynamics of institutional change. Using a survey-based quantitative methodology, the study investigates how institutional pressures shape the strategies and practices of academic incubators. The findings contribute to a conceptual model designed to enhance collaboration between incubators and investors, bridging gaps in support mechanisms and improving the sustainability of startups. Insights from the study provide actionable recommendations for policymakers and institutional leaders to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem in developing contexts.
