Abstract

In the current era of disruption, data has become a vital resource, driving decision-making and nation-building efforts. Statistical literacy—the ability to understand, analyze, and interpret data—is crucial for equipping future educators, particularly prospective mathematics teachers, to effectively teach data skills to the next generation. This preliminary study aims to design a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) that supports statistical literacy in prospective teachers, using the local contexts of South Sumatra. Three contexts are central to this HLT: the Bekarang Iwak tradition, demand and production of Pempek during Ramadan, and coffee productivity in Pagar Alam. Using a design research approach at the preliminary stage, this study identifies culturally relevant contexts that embody statistical elements suitable for instructional use. The HLT design involves reviewing literature, defining mathematical situations within local contexts, establishing instructional starting points, and formulating a sequence of learning activities. The findings indicate that these South Sumatran contexts offer valuable, authentic settings that can enhance prospective teachers’ statistical literacy through contextualized, and engaging with learning experiences.
