Abstract

Augmented Reality (AR) has become a transformative technology in education, particularly in biology, by providing immersive and interactive learning environments. AR enables the visualization of complex anatomical and ecological models, enhancing students’ understanding and collaboration in learning. This study aims to conduct a systematic literature review on the application of AR in biology education by mapping publication trends based on year, three-field plot, thematic map, research method, and the role of AR in fostering collaboration. The research employs a systematic literature review method with data from the Scopus database, covering publications from 2014 to 2024. The selection process follows PRISMA standards, resulting in 42 articles analyzed using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny for data visualization and analysis. The analysis shows a significant increase in the number of publications related to AR in biology education since 2015, peaking in 2023. AR has been proven to enhance learning motivation, academic outcomes, and student collaboration. The thematic map identifies key themes such as sustainability, education, and climate change as rapidly growing research areas. AR technology enhances interaction and collaboration in biology learning, with great potential in sustainable education and skill development. Therefore, AR has great potential to revolutionize biology education through more interactive and collaborative learning experiences.
