Abstract

Reading ability is a fundamental skill that significantly influences academic success and everyday life. Understanding and addressing reading difficulties, particularly in dyslexic students, is crucial for enhancing educational outcomes. This study aims to assess the initial reading abilities of dyslexic students in elementary schools in East Lombok Regency. Employing a descriptive qualitative research method, the researcher gathered data through observations, interviews, and documentation. The sample comprised 25 fourth-grade students, of whom 4 were identified as having dyslexia. The findings revealed that these students struggled primarily with letter recognition, reading vowels and consonants, blending letters into words, and reading simple sentences. Internal factors, such as cognitive and physical challenges, alongside external factors, including a lack of interest in reading and insufficient home support, were identified as significant barriers. The study concludes that while the initial reading abilities of dyslexic students show potential, targeted interventions and supportive home environments are essential for their improvement. By addressing both internal and external factors, educators and parents can significantly enhance the reading skills and academic performance of dyslexic students.
