Abstract

The Malaysian oil and gas industry is at a critical juncture, requiring effective digital transformation (DT) to remain competitive in the global energy landscape. This transformation is driven by three key factors: innovation capability, employee competency, and technology readiness. However, limited research has thoroughly examined how these factors collectively influence DT in the sector.

This systematic literature review (SLR) explores existing studies to analyze the interactions among these factors and their combined impact on DT. Following the PRISMA framework, relevant literature was systematically identified from reputable databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Emerald, and Lens.org. The findings indicate that innovation capability enables adaptability and technological advancement, employee competency supports the effective use of digital tools, and technology readiness provides the foundational infrastructure for DT initiatives.

The review also reveals notable gaps in the Malaysian oil and gas context, such as the absence of sector-specific frameworks and empirical models integrating these factors. Insights from this SLR offer practical implications, emphasizing the need for strategic innovation, workforce development, and readiness assessments. Ultimately, the findings support the development of robust DT strategies and propose future research directions to enhance the industry’s digital maturity.
