Abstract

Lean Six Sigma (LSS) combines the two approaches to increase production, customer satisfaction and cost-effectiveness. LSS increasingly being used by multinational corporations (MNCs) around the world to increase performance and optimize value-added time. The implementation of LSS presents challenges, despite the benefits it provides. The objective of this research is to examine the challenges that are associated with the implementation of LSS in a Malaysian plantation company. Data was gathered using a qualitative case study approach. To understand the challenges of implementing LSS, thematic analysis was used. The findings underscore critical themes related to the challenges, including employee resistance to change, securing buy-in from high level of management and employees, unsuccessful projects, measurement difficulties and higher costs related to training. The resolution of these challenges is necessary to ensure that the LSS will be implemented successfully. This study’s findings contribute to the existing literature on the challenges of LSS implementation in Malaysian plantation companies and offer insights to policymakers and organisations, particularly within the plantation industry, about LSS implementation.
