Abstract

Objective: To explore the challenges and current competencies in cross-cultural doctor-patient communication faced by resident physicians during standardized training in the multi-ethnic context of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. Methods: Using purposive sampling, 12 resident physicians from a tertiary hospital in Guangxi were recruited for semi-structured in-depth interviews. Interview data were analyzed through coding, thematic extraction, and phenomenological analysis employing Colaizzi’s seven-step methodology. Results: Three core themes emerged: (1) Multifaceted manifestations of cross-cultural communication barriers; (2) Systemic deficits in existing medical education and training; (3) Reform imperatives and feasible strategies for competency enhancement. Conclusion: Resident physicians in linguistically diverse regions face significant cross-cultural communication challenges, rooted in systemic educational deficiencies. We contend that cross-cultural doctor-patient communication must be repositioned as a core clinical competency for resident physicians. This study provides empirical evidence for targeted optimization of residency training curricula.
