Abstract

This study examines the effect of design thinking principles and computer-based education (CBE) on mathematics education which happens in a holistic STEM context at Taligaman National High School, Butuan City, Philippines and its importance for student outcomes and pedagogical practices. A mixed-methods design was used which included Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling to analyze quantitative data from 350 senior high school STEM students and a thematic analysis of qualitative data from educators. The PLS-SEM presented relationships that were statistically significant between design thinking, student engagement, and student problem solving. The qualitative results identified important pedagogical challenges and benefits, including interdisciplinary learning and the use of technology. Design thinking supports student motivation and understanding; yet issues related to teacher training and student access to technology continue to be barriers to improving existing instructional practices. The study ends with suggestions for increased teacher professional learning, increased resources, and improved design thinking and CBE structures in instructional practice.
