Abstract

Prerecorded teaching videos provide a more flexible learning environment and have been widely used. Learners can review the same video more than once and can also watch the video at a faster play speed. However, how the choices of teaching videos influence learning is still unclear. This study aims to investigate the effect of different speeds and repetitions on learner satisfaction and performance. We employed a teaching video from an English course in Chinese University MOOCs, and seventy-six undergraduate students were randomly assigned to six groups (watching once at 1.0/1.5/2.0 × speed and watching repeatedly at 1.0/1.5/2.0 × speed). Our results show significantly lower learning performance for watching once than for watching repeatedly in the 1.5 × and 2.0 × speed groups; however, there were no significant differences in the 1.0 × speed group. Interestingly, for learner satisfaction, we found the significantly lower learner satisfaction for watching repeatedly than for watching once in the 1.0 × speed group; however, there were no significant differences in the 1.5 × or 2.0 × speed group. Our results suggest playback speed and repetitions of prerecorded teaching videos both modulated the learner satisfaction and performance.
