Abstract

This paper delves into the cultivation of students’ critical thinking skills in smart English language teaching at universities within the context of the Production-Oriented Approach (POA). As a teaching theory that emphasizes the integration of learning and application, POA highlights a teaching process with three interactive cycles: “output-driven—input-enabled—teacher-student collaborative assessment.” It aims to address the lack of critical thinking skills among students during their learning process. In smart English language teaching at universities, the utilization of modern information technology, such as online platforms and multimedia resources, enriches teaching content and formats, providing robust support for the cultivation of critical thinking skills. The research findings indicate that smart English language teaching based on POA can effectively enhance students’ critical thinking skills. In practical output tasks, students actively engage in thinking and summarizing the learned content. Through smart teaching methods such as online discussions and case studies, students’ critical thinking and innovative abilities have been significantly improved. Additionally, teachers gain a better understanding of students’ learning progress and the development of their critical thinking skills, which supports personalized instruction.
