Abstract

Background: This investigation delved into the chain mediation effects of emotion regulation and resilience, shedding light on how mindfulness impacts depression and anxiety in Chinese adolescents. Methods: A total of 1,135 Chinese adolescent participants were recruited for the study, thus forming a broadly representative sample set. Data were collected using the Trait Mindfulness Scale (TMS), Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), Resilience Scale for Chinese Adolescents (RSCA), and PHQ-9. Results: SEM indicated that mindfulness significantly facilitated the application of cognitive reappraisal strategies, an adaptive approach to emotion regulation that effectively alleviates depression and anxiety. Additionally, mindfulness was found to reduce depressive and anxious symptoms in adolescents by enhancing cognitive reappraisal and strengthening resilience. These results highlight that cognitive reappraisal and resilience serve as chain mediators, linking mindfulness to improved mental health outcomes. Conclusion: This study elucidates how mindfulness alleviates adolescent depression and anxiety through the chained mediation of emotion regulation and resilience. The findings establish a robust theoretical foundation for mindfulness-based interventions targeting adolescent mental health and provide practical guidance for optimizing mental health education and intervention strategies.
