- Abstract
The application of negative space has a long history in Chinese painting, and in recent years it has been used as a creative and analytical tool in a variety of other art forms. The use of negative space is more widespread in Western written works, and some scholars in China use the term “blank” and “negative space” interchangeably. For film and television works, the application of negative space is mostly focused on the analysis of audio-visual language, and because of the specificity of film and television works in terms of the need to articulate stories, logical relationships and images, some scholars believe that negative space cannot be used in the creation and analysis of film and television works. This paper will distinguish between the use of negative space and blank space, and analyze the feasibility of using negative space in film and television works, exploring whether the aesthetics of negative space, one of the classical Chinese aesthetics, can be applied to film and television works.
