Abstract

A substantial body of research has underscored the significant benefits of digital gaming and mobile augmented reality (AR) in enhancing both formal and informal learning for children. To further enhance learning engagement in China, it is crucial to integrate mobile AR into educational digital games. However, the current landscape of educational mobile AR games in China is marred by subpar game content. As a critical component of game content and a pivotal aspect of visual representation, game characters have been extensively studied in educational digital games and significantly influence children’s user experiences. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the significance and impact of character design in children’s educational mobile AR games. This review synthesizes research on the application of character design to enhance the usability of children’s mobile AR games, thereby improving educational outcomes, fostering children’s cognitive development, and invigorating learning interest. The review reveals that further research is warranted to more effectively integrate character design elements to ensure optimal experiences and educational outcomes for children when utilizing educational mobile AR games.
