Abstract

Buildings and cities are becoming more reliant on artificial intelligence (AI) for their design, governance, and functioning in the built environment. Unlike in previous times, when AI was considered as separate technological applications, AI is now becoming more entwined with social practises, and spaces are designed using AI, while institutional frameworks and governance mechanisms are also developed with AI. However, despite these developments, current research on these topics remains scattered across multiple disciplines. For this reason, it is difficult to clearly define how AI-enabled built environments will operate as innovation ecosystems. The purpose of this literature review is to examine how innovation ecosystems have been defined and studied in relation to AI-enabled built environments, particularly with regard to issues of design integration, governance, sustainable development, and cross-sector collaboration.

This research uses rigorous literature review processes based on the PRISMA guidelines, as well as a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of all English-language peer-reviewed literature published by researchers and academics between 2006 and 2025, which is included in SCOPUS. The analyses were performed using R and the Biblioshiny package to create a visual representation of trends of publications, patterns of citations, prominent authors and journals, developments of keywords over time, and overlapping themes of research within individual articles. Techniques used to determine intellectual organisation and developmental trajectory of the discipline included document coupling, thematic mapping, and multiple correspondence analysis.

This research illustrates how the paradigms of AI-enhanced built environments have shifted away from technology-focused studies to ecosystemic and unified frameworks that include considerations such as sustainability. The most prevalent themes identified in these studies include smart cities, sustainable development, and urban planning. The enabling foundations for these three areas of future research are indicated to be AI and the utilization of data to drive decision-making. Significant gaps remain in the theoretical integration of these areas, their empirical validation, alignment with governance frameworks, and ethical dimensions of their development. Ultimately, this literature review combines a number of previously disparate bodies of knowledge and positions AI-enabled built environments as intelligent and dynamic ecosystems that are well-positioned for continued interdisciplinary research initiatives and future policy decisions.
