Abstract

This study examines how the ECRIF (Encounter, Clarify, Remember, Internalize, and Fluently use) framework, aided by BookWidgets, enhances the listening skills of a BIPA (Indonesian for Foreigners) learner from Tanzania. The learner aims to understand and be understood by native Indonesian speakers to support his studies in accounting. A single-subject ABA design was used, with the number of correct answers in listening tests as the behavior indicator for improvement. No data overlap (0%) between conditions indicates a positive effect on improving the BIPA 2 learner’s listening abilities post-intervention. This study finds that activating schemata during the encounter phase significantly aids adult BIPA learners in comprehending listening topics. The clarify stage allows the learner to independently inquire about unfamiliar vocabulary, promoting learner-driven acquisition. Memory of vocabulary and strategies from previous sessions enhances proficiency in subsequent tasks, showing that focusing on internal learner processes supports listening comprehension. It highlights autonomous learning for adult learners, with technology like BookWidgets enhancing error awareness and providing convenience, practicality, and suitability. Additionally, factors contributing to improved listening skills in this study include learner motivation, cumulative learning effects, and repeated exposure to listening materials. Thus, this study provides evidence that the use of the ECRIF framework with BookWidgets support has the potential to serve as an effective alternative approach in teaching listening skills, allowing BIPA instructors to focus not only on listening evaluation but also on teaching it.
