Abstract

Implementing environment-based differentiated learning has the potential to cultivate social emotional learning in students. This is a significant matter in educational theory and the development of character, as it combines SEL and environment-based learning to nurture students’ empathy and accountability. The objective of this study is to investigate how environment-based differentiated learning can be used to incorporate Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and promote students’ responsibility for the environment. The research will explore the effectiveness of this approach in addressing students’ learning needs and integrating SEL to encourage awareness and care for the environment. A descriptive qualitative method was employed for this research, involving data collection through classroom observations, interviews, and document analyses in a setting where environment-based differentiated learning was implemented. Results were analysed to evaluate the effectiveness of the learning strategy in integrating SEL and fostering environmental awareness and responsibility in students. The results show that environment-based differentiated learning is effective in instilling Social Emotional Learning (SEL) values and increasing students’ responsibility towards the environment. Students showed increased empathy, awareness, and pro-environmental behaviour, proving that this method strengthens emotional and social engagement in the context of environmental education. Thus, schools should integrate this method consistently in the curriculum to shape the character of students who are more caring and responsible for environmental conservation.
