Abstract

This study aims to identify the effectiveness of using pictorial narratives to improve the English vocabulary mastery of primary school students. Pictorial narratives, as a teaching medium that focuses on telling and delivering a story through pictures or illustrations, make students more interactive and easier to understand when learning materials. However, more research needs to focus on identifying the effectiveness of interactive digital pictorial narratives, especially for young learners. This study investigates the learning outcome towards the implications of pictorial narratives for English vocabulary learning and identifies the students’ understanding before and after participating in this learning program. The participants involved in this study were twenty-five 4th graders at a state elementary school in Sleman Regency in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The quantitative method with experimental design was adopted to gather data based on the pre-test and post-test results of a vocabulary test. The study demonstrated that integrating pictorial narratives led to a notable enhancement in elementary school students’ vocabulary mastery, as observed from the increased average scores of the pre-test (M = 72.20, S.D. = 22.61) and the post-test (M = 85.44, S.D. = 14.47). Also, the results of the Paired Sample t-test showed that the (Sig.) (2-tailed) value was 0.00 (0.00 < 0.05). It was inferred that the pictorial narratives significantly enhanced primary school students’ vocabulary mastery. Thus, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Consequently, pictorial narratives can be incorporated into English classes, particularly to enhance vocabulary mastery among primary school students.
