Abstract

Frédéric Chopin (1810–1849) is one of the most influential piano composers of the Romantic era and is honored with the epithet “The Poet of the Piano.” His piano oeuvre exhibits a distinctive style: song-like, lyrical melodies; a richly varied harmonic language; freedom and flexibility in rhythm and tempo; and skillful use of the pedal to create unique sonorities, all underpinned by profound emotional depth. This paper analyzes the stylistic characteristics of Chopin’s piano works in light of his life and compositional background. It synthesizes his approaches to melodic construction, harmonic vocabulary, rhythmic treatment, pedaling technique, and emotional expression, and discusses the development and evolution of his style as well as the significance of his works for piano performance and pedagogy. The study finds that Chopin integrated the bel canto lyrical line into piano writing, yielding unprecedented poetic sonority; he expanded the boundaries of traditional harmony through frequent use of chromaticism and modulations to enrich musical color; he breathed new artistic life into Polish dance rhythms; and he emphasized free, expressive rubato and emotional investment in performance. These stylistic hallmarks have rendered Chopin’s works treasures of the piano repertoire, offering invaluable resources for technical training and expressive development.
