Abstract

Static stretching, as a simple and easy warm-up method, is widely used in sports and physical training to improve athlete’s physiological readiness, optimize sports performance and reduce the risk of injury. This paper reviews the effects of static stretching on athletic performance, with the aim of comprehensively assessing its acute effects on strength, speed, flexibility and jumping performance, as well as the effects of long-term static stretching on muscle strength and structure. Studies have found that static stretching may reduce muscle strength in the short term, but long-term, moderate-intensity static stretching training may improve muscle strength and flexibility. Static stretching has a complex effect on muscle power and may lead to a decline in the short term, while long-term training may help to improve maximum strength and power output. Static stretching has been shown to be effective in improving joint and muscle flexibility, especially for athletes who require large joint movements. However, its effect on specific motor performance varies according to the type of exercise, stretch parameters, and individual characteristics. Reasonable application of static stretching should be adjusted according to individual situation and sports goals in order to optimize athlete’s performance and reduce the risk of injury.
