- Abstract
While current research on Schubert’s Erlkönig mainly focuses on compositional techniques, vocal performance, piano accompaniment and Romantic style, relatively little attention has been paid to its dramatic expression. Building on these foundations, this article takes Schubert’s Erlkönig as a piece of musical drama, exploring its character portrayal in a dramatic context. Focusing on how Schubert integrates music and drama in a Romantic style, the article adopts methods of musical and textual analysis to examine the character depiction, music structure, musical materials, and dramatic expression of the work in depth. Attention has been paid to the relationship between the music and text. The conclusion suggests that in Erlkönig, Schuber skillfully integrates text and music in a Romantic idiom, through its profound dramatic intention and compositional technique. This study not only offers a perspective for analyzing Schubert’s music, but also provides valuable insights for understanding and appreciating Classical and Romantic-era repertoire.
